FAMILY DEPARTMENT PARALEGAL ROLE - JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Start date – July 2024 (or earlier by agreement) 

 

Deadline for Applications: 22nd April 2025 

​

• Work within the Family Law Team, which operates a mixed practice of Children Act and Family Law Act work, both legal aid and privately paid. This opportunity could lead to a training contract for the appropriate candidate 

• Work will be based at our offices, in Enfield Town 

• Work may involve travel to court, or to attend Local Authority meetings in relation to children at risk 

 

Initial tasks: 

• Be trained to apply for Legal Aid on new matters, opening files and sending necessary initial letters to court, such as notices of acting

• Assist Solicitors, under supervision, by considering evidence and providing summaries as needed 

• Assist with putting together court bundles, for onwards sending to court, under supervision 

• Attend court to sit behind Counsel or the Solicitor Advocate as and when necessary

 

Tasks we will train you to do: 

• Meeting clients, taking their instructions in preparation for drafting their statements 

• Drafting statements for clients based on their instructions

• Providing basic initial advice on Family Law matters to new clients 

• Screening initial enquiries from clients 

• Shadow solicitors on Pre Proceedings ‘legal gateway’ cases, where the Local Authority are considering issuing care proceedings in relation to children in their local area, and assist with the running of that file

Things we will expect you to pick up in due course 

• Work towards your own case holding, representing clients in legal gateway meetings, and perhaps also within Children Act cases, under close supervision 

• Being able to assist clients generally with cases under close supervision
